One month on and we have some exciting news regarding fundraising. We have now raised roughly a third of the funds we need to attend the World Finals in Abu Dhabi in November. We have had a number of generous donations to our GoFundMe campaign (gofundme.com/centurionracingworldfinals) and a local company, Aflex Hose Limited, have made a significant contribution to our campaign funds. Aflex Hose, the world’s leading manufacturer of PTFE flexible hose, are now our title sponsors for the event and we have developed a new logo for the event which reflects this. Fundraising is still obviously a priority for the team and if you can support the team in any way, large or small, it would be much appreciated. Email laurence@centurionracing for details of sponsorship packages.

Centurion Racing make it through to the World Finals
We are always delighted to hear of the achievements of the young people in our area, and so we were very pleased last year to receive an article from Laurence Vines, who has lived in the Bolster Moor Community area of Harts Hole for over thirteen years. Laurence was 14 when he first founded Centurion Racing which designed, built and raced the fastest car in the country in the F1 in Schools competition. Here, in a second article, Laurence gives an update on the further achievements of Centurion Racing:

Westwood Christian Centre
Westwood Christian Centre – A gem on the hillside
I wonder just how many people wander past Westwood Christian Centre (WCC) and say to themselves `What does go on in there?’. From the outside, Westwood looks very much like many other country churches and of course at one time it was the daughter church of St John’s in Golcar. However, in 1993 when the congregation had declined and decided to move elsewhere, David and Glenys Greenwood bought the building with a vision of developing a place of `beauty, refreshing and peace.’ Continue reading
Things to do in Bolster Moor
Things to do in Bolster Moor
Walking: There are many delightful walks around the area to suit all ages and abilities. From an easy stroll round the lanes, to muddy boots walks on well defined footpaths. There is a network of paths around the Pole Moor radio masts, which afford sweeping vistas of the surrounding countryside. Some of the tracks are also suitable for mountain biking, while the hilly nature of the roads provides challenging cycling routes. For people who enjoy baking or wine making, there are a number of wild raspberry patches in the area, which usually ripen in July, whilst in late Summer, there are blackberries and bilberries in abundance, all free for the picking. Golcar Workhouse
Tales from Golcar Workhouse by Elaine Wortley August 2014
The Huddersfield Chronicle of 18th May, 1850 was understandably shocked by the Poor Law Board’s inspection report of its Golcar Workhouse, along with two other workhouses in the area. It declared “it must deeply concern the ratepayers of Huddersfield and the neighbourhood embraced in this Union”. Yet, Golcar’s workhouse, “deemed unfit for the poor of any kind” on inspection, somehow managed to muddle along almost a further twenty years, simply because it was needed. Continue reading
